Book Review: The Creation of Human Ability by L Ron Hubbard

This book is different from other L. Ron Hubbard philosophy books. While it definitely is a book on spiritual philosophy, it has one major difference. The book has auditing processes that can be used to exteriorize the being from the body.

The word auditing comes from the Latin word audire, meaning to hear. Scientology is a philosophy about life, what is life, what are the laws of life. It was found that life, the essence man called a spirit, was separate to the body. While Buddhists and Hindus would not find this an unusual observation, it is new for the West. L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology, travelled to the East as a young man in the 1920’s. He visited India, Japan and lamaseries in China. He learned about life, researched mysticism, and many different mental and spiritual phenomena. In 1932 he coined a name for his research – Scientology.

By the time L. Ron Hubbard had penned Creation of Human Ability, he had given 537 lectures on the subject of exteriorization. The book is the printed culmination of this work.

As extraordinary as the subject of exteriorization sounds to a westerner, exteriorization is the purpose of this book. Scientologists have been doing it for fifty-three years now.

It is Scientology’s purpose to rehabilitate the being, fully rehabilitate his innate abilities, including the state of being exterior to the body.

The book was written in 1957, and is the eleventh book in the evolutionary track of Dianetics and Scientology. Dianetics started as a mental science in 1948 to erase neurosis and bring about a mental state called Clear. Then it was found that man had memories of past lives. And if that was accepted, then one should not be surprised to know that one was a spirit, instead of a body, and that he may be able to separate from that body.

Certainly there have been religions over the past many thousands of years which have attempted exteriorization from the body. But this is the first time exteriorization is available in simple steps that anyone can do.

While exteriorization in the east went along a mystical route, L. Ron Hubbard approaches it along an engineering western styled route. The book lays out how anyone with patience and time can bring about the state of exterior just by following the instruction outlined in the book.

The book also has a collection of writings by the author. There is a large section titled: This is Scientology – The Science Of Certainty. Here are excellent descriptions of the minds of man, the reactive and analytical minds.

Also there are The Factors, which is the Scientology cosmology of how the universe was created and what part we, as spiritual beings, play in it.

Then there is Scientology, Its General Background. Here L. Ron Hubbard describes Scientology as, “The Western Anglicized continuance of many earlier forms of wisdom. Scio – study.” He lists earlier studies of knowledge, and that Scientology is a continuance of these, such as the Veda, the Tao. And he acknowledges those who brought us that knowledge, the legendary Hindu sage – Dharma, Gautama Sakyamuni (Buddha), Moses, as well as Jesus of Nazareth. He also mentions the Western seekers of wisdom, and those who brought about the artificial division of science from religion.

This is a fascinating book and can be read alone, though it means more if one has read the preceding research books in the evolution Scientology. The book is over 500 pages, and in hard bound version. It was recently republished and provides a 43 page editor’s glossary for difficult to understand words, terms and phrases. While the Creation of Human Ability is an advanced book, it can also be found in many libraries.
